Anne Frank House

The secret annex

The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam holds a secret that depended on a bookcase.

It swung open like a door, and behind it was a hiding place that very few people knew existed. Today the house is a museum in memory of Anne Frank and her Jewish family. It is built around the rear annexe at Prinsengracht 263, the place where Anne wrote her diary. The museum opened on 3 May 1960. The family went into hiding because Anne's sister, Margot, had received a call-up for labour service in Germany.

In August, a revolving bookcase was fitted to hide the way into the hiding place. Below them was a warehouse, so during the day the people in hiding had to stay very quiet. Any noise could give them away. Only four employees of the company Opekta knew they were there. Today, the diary room shows parts of Anne's original notebooks. The pictures she stuck on the walls of her little room have been restored and are kept behind glass.

Rijksmuseum

Rembrandt's Night Watch and the gallery of honour

At the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the most famous painting of all hangs at the very end of a long hall, as if the whole building were leading you towards it.

The Rijksmuseum shows Dutch art and history, with works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals. Since 1885 it has been housed in a building designed by the architect Pierre Cuypers. Its greatest treasures hang in the Gallery of Honour, a big hall running along the length of the museum. At its far end, in the Night Watch Room, you reach Rembrandt's Night Watch, the best-known work in the museum.

It is not alone. With 22 paintings, the Rijksmuseum owns the largest collection of Rembrandts anywhere. Today the building has more than 80 rooms, set between the Stadhouderskade and the Museumplein. In 2023 the Vermeer exhibition drew over 650,000 visitors, the best attendance the museum has ever had for an exhibition.
